A biomarker is just a measurable signal from the body that tells you something about health. Blood values, inflammatory markers, body composition, even features of the gut and oral microbiome. They matter because they change before symptoms do. They're the body speaking early, if you're listening.

For ageing specifically, certain markers give a much clearer read on how a dog is really doing than their birthday ever could.

Body condition and muscle mass

Not glamorous, but among the most powerful. Body condition score, a hands-on and visual assessment of whether a dog is lean, ideal or carrying excess weight, tracks closely with lifespan. Muscle mass is the other half. Losing muscle with age, is linked to reduced healthspan, not just weakness. Together they're one of the most controllable markers you have.

Inflammatory load

Chronic, low-grade inflammation is one of the through-lines of ageing. It doesn't announce itself, but it quietly raises the risk of joint disease, metabolic problems and faster cellular decline. Inflammatory markers in bloodwork can flag when that background load is rising, often long before there's a visible problem.

Kidney and organ trends

Some of the most useful markers sit in routine bloodwork. Kidney values are a good example. Creatinine is the traditional one, but it moves late, by the time it climbs, a lot of function is already gone. SDMA shifts earlier, which is why it's become a more useful early signal. Either way, a steady move in one direction across several tests tells you far more than any single reading. The signal is in the trajectory, not the snapshot.

Metabolic markers

How a dog handles energy says a lot about how it's ageing. Glucose is the obvious one, but it's noisy on a single test, fructosamine gives a steadier read of blood sugar over time. Add in triglycerides and cholesterol and you get a picture of metabolic health, which is tightly bound up with weight, diet and ageing. Shifts here can be early signs worth flagging with your vet.

The microbiome

Newer to the picture, but moving fast. Two microbiomes matter here, gut and oral, and both link local health to whole-body ageing.

The gut microbiome does far more than digest food. A diverse, balanced community of gut bacteria helps regulate immune function and keep inflammation in check. When it loses diversity or tips out of balance, dysbiosis, low-grade inflammation can rise across the body. In dogs this is measurable:  we can turn that balance into a trackable number. The oral microbiome is easy to underestimate. Oral health isn't cosmetic. It's a readable window into whole-body inflammation.

A note on how to read a biomarker

Two things trip owners up. The first is treating "outside the normal range" as an emergency and "inside the range" as all-clear. Reference ranges are population averages. A value sitting comfortably in range can still be a meaningful change if it's moved a long way from your dog's own normal, and a value just outside range can be nothing at all. Context matters.

The second is reacting to a single result. Biology fluctuates. What turns a number into a signal is direction and repetition, the same marker moving the same way across more than one test. That's why a baseline taken while your dog is well is so valuable: it's what every later result gets read against. A biomarker in isolation is a data point. A biomarker over time is information.

Why no single marker tells the story
